Gloucestershire Airport Regains Normal Operational Status Following CAA Oversight

Gloucestershire Airport has officially returned to normal regulatory status after a period of enhanced oversight by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). This development follows the successful lifting of both the “On Notice” and “Special Attention” classifications, which had been in place since an audit in 2023 revealed concerns in air traffic control operations, including outdated systems and procedural deficiencies.

Initially placed “On Notice”—the most serious form of regulatory attention short of licence removal—the airport faced significant pressure to demonstrate compliance and reform. Through extensive effort and strategic investment, the airport’s status was downgraded to “Special Attention” in early 2024 and, as of June 2025, all special measures have now been lifted.

The airport’s leadership described this achievement as a major milestone, crediting the team’s resilience and determination throughout a difficult period. The recovery plan focused heavily on improving air traffic control, including a full systems upgrade backed by a £500,000 investment, a review of procedures, and a restructuring of senior management roles. Crucially, all this was accomplished without any operational downtime.

Both internal teams and external contractors played vital roles in delivering the required improvements to meet CAA standards. The successful outcome brings a range of benefits, including more efficient operations, better staff retention, stronger safety practices, and improved service delivery for passengers and tenants alike.

While some interim traffic control measures remain in place, they are under ongoing review and expected to be phased out as infrastructure enhancements and staff development continue.

Looking ahead, the airport is completing its ATC system upgrades and rolling out a modern flight information system later in the year. The timing of the CAA clearance is also strategically significant, aligning with the final stages of the airport’s planned ownership transition. Leadership noted that continued regulatory oversight could have complicated or delayed the sale process.

With this regulatory hurdle now cleared, Gloucestershire Airport is positioned to move into a new phase of growth, development, and improved service for the wider region.
