Qatar Airways, the state carrier of the Gulf country of the same name, plans to acquire a 25% stake in Australian Airline Virgin Australia. The specific details of the deal have not been disclosed yet, but more information is expected to be released soon. Before this minority acquisition can be finalized, it must receive regulatory approval. Qatar and Qantas are both part of Oneworld, making this move interesting.

Virgin Australia’s CEO stated, “This partnership fills a crucial gap in Virgin Australia’s long-term strategy.” The airline has faced challenges, particularly during the pandemic. It had to retire its long-haul aircraft, such as the 777-300ER and A330s. Therefore, it ceased its operations on the US West Coast. This sector is now dominated by Qantas and its Oneworld partner, American Airlines. With its fleet of 737s, the airline now mainly focuses on domestic flights and a few regional international flights, such as those to Bali.

Investment in the carrier will help it better compete with Qantas, which operates most domestic flights within Australia. It could also aid in renewing the fleet, potentially leading the airline to resume services to additional international destinations.
